We are Drinking Some Merlot….

In 2014, after more than a decade of mastering the Duckhorn Vineyards style, Renee Ary was named the fourth winemaker in the four-decade history of Duckhorn Vineyards. In the years that have followed, Renee has been recognized for making some of the finest wines in the history of Duckhorn Vineyards.

With that kind of pedigree, Renee was a natural choice to pair the wines for a luncheon at Hall’s Chophouse, Charleston’s premier steakhouse, prepared by local Chef Adam Jakins, on Thurs March 7th as part of the upcoming Charleston Wine and Food festival (March 6-10).

On Friday, March 8th at 1pm Renee will lead guests on a Master of Merlot tasting at Wine & Company that will highlight four separate regions of Napa: the cool climate of Carneros, the warm Three Palms, the mountains of Atlas Peak, and a broad view of Napa Valley and its blends. You’ll leave as a master of Merlot, ready to show off your Napa know-how to your friends and family. And Miles can go to hell, we’re drinking Merlot!!! Take it away Renee!!!

What was last night’s dinner? My husband made a slow-cooked adobe chicken for me last night.

Favorite drink? Aside from coffee, either wine or a well-made Mojito depending on the time of the year. I switch to cocktails during the harvest. Outside of harvest it’s all about wine.

Favorite dining spot in Napa? I have quite a few as we are fairly spoiled here in Napa. Top picks are Cook, Bottega, Morimoto, The Rutherford Grill and Auberge du Soleil.

Favorite music? I am a big fan of reggae. It is always soothing.

Favorite thing about living and working in Napa? We have tremendous culinary options here in Napa and they are all good. I also love the energy that permeates the valley during the harvest.

Any brush with celebrity? Oprah attended Auction Napa Valley back in 2008 and I pour our barrel lot for her. It was a very cool moment.

What makes a great winery? It begins with a great product but the real success comes from having a great team and the passion & pride to fuel that team.

Any wine, meal or place to visit on your bucket list? I would love to scuba dive in the Great Barrier Reef.

Final thoughts? I am looking forward to kicking off my first visit to the 2019 Charleston Wine & Food festival!
