Extravaganza’s Engaging Co-founder….

It was a kick to converse with David Bernahl, Monterey’s Restaurant 1833 owner and co-founder of the Pebble Beach Food and Wine Festival which is coming up on its 10th anniversary next week.  David was bubbling over with the enthusiasm about food and wine that I try to bring to the Insider. And away we go…

Last night’s dinner? I had the privilege of hosting a charity dinner at 1833 last night. I was dressed up like a waiter/chef and I loved it. We raised over $20,000 for the Monterey Museum of Art.

Dave went off on a mouth-watering description of courses that was divided between vegan and carnivore… and while I definitely lean toward the carnivore, the vegan dishes sounded just as good…

Aren’t vegans a pain in the arse? A delighted laugh from Bernahl… I used to feel the same, but more and more people want the choice of a vegan menu and my chef, Mikey Adams, was knocking out courses that were just as good vegan as carnivore…

Favorite drink? White burgundy… oh man, that’s got to be expensive… Another delighted laugh from Bernahl… You’re telling me… but no regrets, shared some great sips with friends and family who appreciated it… I love all beverages… I used to be into this balance thing… but now I know there’s a place for a big, brawny red… I love a well-mixed cocktail… bring it all on…

Favorite dining out spot in Monterey besides 1833? Bernahl didn’t hesitate when he said, Akaoni. It’s a small little Japanese place, maybe seats 25 at the most between a couple of tables and the sushi bar. It’s chef/owner, Shinicki Yamada delivers the freshest sushi and sashimi that is just incredible. He goes back to Japan four or five times a year and brings back the most incredible seaweed and fish that you can’t get here. I’ve dined at some three star Japanese places and Akaoni is right up there with them.

Favorite thing about living in Monterey? Two things. The scenery and the community. It really is a magical place. There are so many unique little spots that you can never get tired of exploring the place. And the community is something special as well. Everyone pulls together and we are all lucky to be a part of it.

Any final thoughts about the Pebble Beach Fest 10th anniversary? In a way, it’s just a number, but it’s almost surreal, seems like we just started yesterday. So many great memories though, with more to come I’m sure. I’m not looking to do more festivals, just want to concentrate on the two we do become better and better. Chef Thomas Keller has been a huge inspiration for us. He’s been a terrific supporter right from the beginning. But he’s such an inspiration in how he does everything deliberately and always so classy. That’s my inspiration and emulation.
